  • >VLCC – Don’t venture anywhere close!!!

    >VLCC?
I was never a metro sexual kinda person, to be thronging such places for external beauty. My visit to the barber was all that I actually did for the looks and even that just I look presentable. People staying with me would vouch on the fact that it is easier to live with the Taliban terrorists, rather than an unshaven, not bathed from 6 days, and not brushed Bharat Jhurani.

But of late, I have been getting these internal vibes to take care and look good. No, I am still single! This is what explains my daily tryst with the brush and Close up Calcium with added ingredients, new found garnier Fructis for the hair, Dove for the face, cinthol for the body and calmness for the mind. It also explains the reason I am bathing everyday in spite of the temperature not exactly being conducive for such an action.

Thus, a couple of days ago, when Chitta announced that he has a VLCC voucher worth 5000 bucks, i immediately laid my hands on it. But Abhinav, being that huge and rusty guy he is, had the better of Chitta and overpowered him to take the voucher. Now I had this seemingly tough task of convincing Abhinav to part with the voucher.

I went to Abhinav’s room, and praised him Explained to him that he looks great, and such VLCC likes are for lesser mortals, ugly looking ducks like me (Generally it would require lots of chocolates for me to actually say this). Nah! Abhinav did not agree. Come on even he is an IIM MBA. One more trick in Strategic Business Negotiation – The Amitabh trick. Remember an old Indian Amitabh flick where he buys an house for double the price, and tells the builder that even if he had charged 4 times the actual price, Amitabh would still have paid it, as his mother worked on the construction. Thus, the value of the product perceived by different people is different.

I offered Abhinav a full pack of Classic regular, and he immediately agreed. 5000 bucks voucher for just 88 bucks. Cool deal that was. But well, as I said, perception of value. And moreover, Abhinav earned that pack just for overpowering Chitta. He did not have anything to lose.

Anyways, so on 25th December, me and Baka set out for VLCC. First a Mutton biryani at Spice, recharge for the reliance data card, and then off to Sahara ganj to VLCC.
With lots of scepticism, and initial doubts, we entered the premise. Wait! Sujith was already sitting there, and on further probing we found that he had come here for some scalp thing. Anyways, I head to the reception and show here this voucher, and ask her for assistance. She asks me to wait.

After an irritating wait, my eyes found a board asking to request for a service menu. Wah! Now beauty has been turned into a restaurant business. Many therapies on the platter please fulfil your satisfaction. Anyways, I am not able to make much sense out of it, and just ask for a pedicure and Manicure. “ No, Sir. That is not available with the voucher”. The receptionist says. “Where is it written?”, I ask to myself in a flabbergasted look. The receptionist there understands my confusion and helplessness and offers me to meet the head receptionist (or was she the owner?) there after some time. So wait once again.

After another 25 minutes, and a couple of enquiries about this busy head I am about to meet, I am introduced to Mrs yogita (I am sure she was married by her age, marred with a lot of make up to cover it up), who led me to her cabin. She also invited Baka to come along. After the initial pleasantries, which proved that she was a good employee for the hospitality business she let it out that everyone is busy, (Are me and Baka the only vela people), and she was afraid she cannot get anything arranged for that day. To calm down my angry disappointed looks, and with the fear that she might lose the IIML account, she pointed towards the voucher which had Meet with prior appointment as the first point behind it. She then offered us to meet the beautician and the gym trainer. I asked Baka too make it very clear to her that we are not going to pay a paisa more than the voucher, so whatever she does, and even if she does not offer any services, its not an issues as long as she does not expect me to dole out a single penny. This was out of fear from Chitta’s INDEX incident.

Supposedly, the Mr INDEX last year, was awarded with a similar coupon and he went to VLCC. Like the typical Indian middle class, he did not declare the voucher in the beginning fearing drop in service level, and got himself a complete makeover. He got himself done all possible services on offer. After the whole day of beautification he proudly walked to the reception to produce the voucher, where he was handed a bill of twelve thousand rupees. Aghast! He cried foul, and refused to pay. The people there at VLCC tried explaining that not everything is included in the voucher, and he has to pay the bill. The issue is right now in court with the customer filing a complaint against VLCC, and even blaming INDEX for not informing him of any such issue. How could they? They themselves did not have a clue of the whole thing. Well, I did not want to land in such a situation spending ten grand on my looks, which I am very sure would not change much just by some sessions at this fraud entity. Why fraud? Well, you would say the same after reading the entire plight.

The rest of the incident would be in the next post. In the meantime, don’t venture anywhere near these VLCC types, citing Short term memory loss. This irritating incident should be etched permanently in everyone’s mind even if the head is blowed by heavy iron shots by some Ghajini.

  • >Ghajini Movie Review

    >The South has always made better commercial movies than BollyWood, and many of them have been remade in hindi. Ghajini adds on to the list, and excellent it is.

One interesting fact is the name of the movie, which makes it one of the few movies which have the Villain’s name as its name.( Can’t recall any other movies with the villain’s name as the name of the movie, but i guess there sure should be some!).

Saw the movie today in the premier how at FUN. We booked our tickets in the morning itself, and later read about the controversy. We were skeptical if it would actually release or we would be forced to watch Rab ne bana di jodi again (I don’t mind though!). Thankfully the courts allowed it to be screened without allaying to the claims of the original producer who was trying to make some quick money. You can also check similar sites at lizzardco.com for more information.

The case goes simple. A little-known production banner, KBC Pictures, had filed a case in the court Monday, claiming that producer Madhu Mantena had infringed upon its copyright as it had acquired the right to re-make ‘Ghajini’ in Hindi. In other words, the Tamil producer (who originally made the movie) claims to have sold the rights to Allu only for the telugu version. And now he is after Allu daring him to reason his quest in making it in hindi, when he was already in the mood of making Kahani Ghajini ki!! What? Did he want to make a serial soap or something??

And the timing of filing the case just seems apt. Did the complainer not get affected by the massive marketing done by the producers spending over 140 million rupeer.

Having seen the Telugu version, comparisons were bound. in spite of initially believing that Surya was a different kinda actor, and Aamir would not fit into his shoes, Aamir has given his full as always, and it shows. be it his physique (which by any standards is huge considering the Aamir look that we have been seeing all these years), his look as the traumatic person, posh look of the flashback character – he excels in all.

The review of the movie from real Bollywood

Sanjay Singhania (Aamir) after being hit on head suffers from a short term memory loss. He cannot recollect anything beyond 15 minutes. He has various phone numbers and names tattooed on his body all hinting at one thing, seek revenge for the murder of his girlfriend, Kalpana (Asin). The only clue he has is the name that he remembers his dying girlfriend uttered in his ears – Ghajini. What obstacles Sanjay encounters in his hunt for Ghajini forms the rest of the film.

The film is a perfect masala film, a revenge thriller, a genre which was very popular in the 80s. But what sets the film apart from a typical pot boiler is the way the screenplay has been structured, oscillating between flashbacks and present time. There is also a good balance of romance, suspense, action and comedy. Plus the biggest asset – Aamir Khan! The story has two major flashbacks, but unlike many films where flashbacks do nothing for the film itself, this one actually aids in building the character and adding intensity to them. Having seen Sanjay’s past life, you see reason for his current actions. The film at no point justifies the actions but it does give you reason to go with the flow.

Murugados’s direction is terrific and the master story teller that he is, he just doesn’t give the audience a moment to think even in 180 minutes running time film. Technically it definitely stands amongst the best films of 2008. Superb editing (Anthony), excellent camerawork (Ravi K Chandran) and amazing sound design (Resul) take the film to an altogether different level. The action by Peter Hains and Stunt Shiva keeps you on the edge of your seat. But some action sequences have turned out a bit too gory and not meant for the faint hearted. But with Aamir giving his everything all out in them they end up being a treat to watch. A.R. Rahman’s melodies are a treat to watch onscreen having been excellently picturised. Also, none of the songs hamper the proceedings.

Amongst the sequences that stand out are Aamir’s first encounter with Asin, Aamir visiting Asin’s boss’s party, Aamir’s outburst in the hospital, Asin’s murder sequence and of course the action packed climax where Aamir for a moment forgets what he is fighting for when he comes face to face with the villain!

In an author backed role, Aamir has outperformed himself, making us fall short of words in his praise. He is not only utterly convincing as a killing machine but he is extremely loveable in the romantic comedy sequences with Asin. South starlet Asin in her Bollywood debut leaves a lasting impression. Jiah though fits the part somehow pales in comparison to Asin. Her accented Hindi irritates. Pradeep Rawat brings back to Bollywood, the true villain that was missing since long time. He is menacingly good.

Ghajini does live up to the hype it has generated and is a must watch for Aamir Khan fans and also for debutante Asin and the latest addition to talented filmmakers of Bollywood, director A.R. Murugadoss.

Overall, a nice time pass entertainer. The producer is in to rake in the moolah taking advantage of the extended weekend barring friday, and the soon to follow new year.

After getting back from the movie, headed for the StEX committee meeting, and form there straight to the gult wing for Absenthine bought from France by Charan. Ah! it feels bliss, on spite of just two pegs.

Now in the room, juts trying to get over the insomnia. probably i should download Ramgopal varma Ki Aag from DC, and then watch it, for it to act as sedatives. Sleep!

  • >MTV – Jadoo Ek Bar

    >The next one in the pipeline. FFFF rocks. Don know what is it? Fully faltoo film festival. Amazing sense of humour.

Found the first one the series – Bbechare Zameen par, on the LAN. FUNNY. ONe word to describe it. Especially the guy playing Aamir khan. his instincts were impeccable.

Even the story line, and the song sung by Cyrus himself. “Kya Mandir ka ghanta hun mein Maa??”. the entry of Aamir( mimicked) as Joker was fun. WHY SO SERIOUS?

I believe these parodies would fare better at the box office than the routine masala fares like Chamku. What exactly was the director thinking while making the movie. And Chamku, i am sure the director was bent on a vindictive agenda against the producer.

Anyways, till then, see the poster of their latest offering.

  • >How i keep myself busy?

    >It has hit me many times. Why dont i reply to all people who ping me on gtalk. I sometimes simply ignore that they are pinging, or most of the times, give a reply – “Busy”. As if i am the president of the United states, having the entire world out there to go take control.. er. care of.

I analyzed and then listed down all the activities that i typically do in a day, and then formulated a research design to see where i was spending most of the time. the sample time being 3 days of observation. yeah! this is what an MBA does to you, make simpler things complex. Observing myself. Huh!

One thing that stood distinctly in my time sliced period was MOVIES. Very surprising, coz i never imagined myself to be a movie buff. i have always enjoyed the typical comedy govinda salman khan type movies, which don’t make sense at all. probably, of late, many such movies are being made.

One more interesting insight from this “SHAMTATA experiment”, ( yeah, name everything you do, give it an identity. one more thing an MBA teaches you.), is that most of these movies have been watched in the wee hours of morning, typical time of the show being 5AM to 7AM. Why?? Why don’t i sleep?. Coz my tummy cries to get it away from the rats play. hunger. and the mess opens at 7:30, so the best way to pass time – MOVIES. Come on, Stop kidding me. i am not the maggu kinds to study at that unearthly hour. and nature has ensured with the mass factory churned face that i have been given, that no one calls me at such an hour. So, back to MOVIES again.

in this pursuit, i thought, why not benefit you – my dear readers, to a short synopsis of the various movies i have seen in the last two weeks, to help you decide if you really want to get your head hammered upon.

ACCEPTED – A nice decent movie about a guy who does not get “accept” letters from any university, and plans to start one of his own. little did he guess the possibility that this could very well be what he’d be doing. So all you people there, wanting to get into the IIMs and IITs, i guess this is a better way. Start your own BJIIM. (when there can be an RGIIM, wht not a BJIIM?)

Sin City – About a dark corrupted city. and the story of 3 different people and the way they get tangled in the SIN CITY. Watch it, only if you have the sadist taste of seeing people getting killed in the most innovative ways. Ruthless.
Sadist here reminds me of a friend. I don remember why i keep calling her sadist, but now the name has stuck. and don ask what she calls me.

Astha Chamma – A cool telugu flick. had a big crush on the actress right from my graduation days, when she used to host a popular local show. Ah! she has the looks. Movie? Who cared about it? I was just staring at Swati.

Ugly aur Pagli – Shameless degraded copy of the korean flick My sassy girl. Worthless, in spite of it having mallika in it.

Wanted – Who said only Rajnikanth can do all the death defying, gravity defying steps? Who said bullets shot from a normal gun need to travel in a straight line? Who said a car needs to be driven only with hands and the body inside the car? See this movie and break all false beliefs.

Choti Si Baat – KK recommended this one and tempted me towards it by the concept. A loser of a guy – Amol palekar, goes to a learned person, and learns all tricks to floor the girl of his dreams. Also tricks to remove the thorn – Asrani, who is presently hoverng around his girl. Now the plot can seriously be so related, to a guy with looks like mine. Nice enjoyable movie. but learning, nah! Alas i would still remain single, as the tricks thought here seem to be too old to apply in the present world.

Shaurya – Awesome movie about the defence services and its internal processes. Rahul Bose has excelled in the role, ann so has Kay kay and others.A must watch.

Mumbai Meri Jaan – Nice touching movie about the after affects of the local train blasts that rocked Mumbai. Madhavan at his best, and Imran Khan has given an amazing performance without uttering a single Hindi word. Again, A must watch.

A wednesday – A common man’s reply to the system, holding them on his toes for one whole day. the movie is set in mumbai , with the frequent terror bomb blasts as the backdrop. If you have not seen this, read no more, and immediately jump away to get hold of the DVD.

Now this was the list of movies completed in the last 14 days. but guys, me still busy, and you may still get the reply ” BUSY” on gtalk. I am sorry for that. please email in case of anything really important. Wil surely reply even if the question is as mundane as ” how do i crack CAT”, or as serious as ” My CAT has died how do i do its cremation and the ceremony”.

now me off to read my Brother’s blog. he’s been writing really well and frequently. Especially the post describing his chance meeting with Senorita during the train journey of the industrial tour.

okay, now this would be it, before my next one.( which i am sure will be pretty soon.). now i take your leave, so that i can smoke in peace. practising not to smoke in public spaces for the ban from oct 2nd. you never know i may be fined on the premise that this blog is a public space.

  • >ROCK ON!!!

    >The movie.

Amazing. Jus seen it. Exams going on, but the reviews were so tempting that had to see it. So there we all started off, after a full plate of good south Indian Biryani in Lucknow, to PVR.

n whoa! What do we find?? Half of IIM Lucknow is out there. The reviews were really tempting.

    Review
    *Rock on*

The movie starts showing some 4 middle aged guys, unfamiliar faces, who by the end of the movie become so known. All of them are sad with some thing or the other in their lives, trying to divert their energies on something which they dont love to do, but they are doing it.

Sounds like Dil Chahta Hai?? Yes, this movie is about friends( 4 here), and their lives. how it all came to a stop.. their friendship.. their care.. Their MAGIC.

The screenplay needs a special mention here. instead of the typical – show some scenes in the present.. then go to flashback, showing a happy go lucky friends.. n then come back to the present to set everything right. Rock on differs here. The past and the present is so beautifully blended that it just goes on. and the long hairstyles of each of the main characters in the past makes good differentiation.

ONe more special thing to be mentioned about – FARHAN AKHTAR. The producer?? NAh!!.. The actor.. The Singer.. this guy has an amazing screen presence, and his baritoone voice sets it straight. Filled with attitude and charm.

The music rocks, the performances rock, the looks grandeur. It sometimes feels like watching one of those live rock show telecasts on VH!. It is a movie for today.. u have I Bankers.. businessmen.. Failed business man.. All tied up with their passion for music and MAGIC.

The well interspersed music and the humour in the movie just adds in to the gist.

i am not saying that this is the best ROCK movie made ever, but yes, in India this marks a new beginning.

Well, MAGIC is the name of their band.

Surely, this movie would inspire the budding rocksters who definitely need a boost in this country. Except for Parikrama and a few more, there is no worth mentioning bands in India.

n yeah, would love to see the movie again tomorrow itself.. but as Farhan says in the movie – ” Compromises to karne padte hai”

So, by the time i write my end term 4 exams.. U ppl.. ROCK ON!!!

p.s.: Me reaching Vizag on 2nd sep, for the end term holidays. YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!
